Slow Cooker Red Cabbage
Slow Cooker Red Cabbage is a vibrant side dish made by shredding red cabbage and combining it with onion, light brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and ground cinnamon. Cooked slowly over several hours, it develops a tender texture and a balance of sweet, tangy, and mildly spiced flavors that enhance its natural earthiness.
Ingredients
- 550 g red cabbage shredded
- 1 onion small; peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Put all of the ingredients in to the slow cooker, season with salt and pepper and mix well.
- Cook on low for 5 hours.
Notes
- Replacing vinegar with water reduces color vibrancy but softens acidity.
- Use a food processor or coarse grater to shred cabbage efficiently.
- Spices like ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and touches of orange zest or juice can be added for festive variation.
- Grated apples, pears, or cranberries enhance texture and flavor.
- A splash of red wine adds depth to the dish.
- Fill your slow cooker between half and three-quarters full to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.
- Double the recipe quantity if your slow cooker is large.
