Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil plus more, for frying
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • honey for serving, optional

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the oil and warm water; stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 3-5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough in half and roll each half to 1/8-inch thickness.
  6. Cut the dough into 3-inch squares.
  7. Heat 2 inches of oil to 375°F in a deep pan.
  8. Fry a few squares at a time until they puff and turn golden, about 1 minute per side.
  9. Use paper towels to drain them, and serve warm with honey if desired.
