South Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce
South Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce blends yellow and whole grain mustard with apple cider vinegar, honey, brown sugar, and spices for a tangy and sweet barbecue sauce. It’s cooked gently to meld flavors and can be served warm or cold. Garlic and onion granules provide depth, and optional blending can smooth out texture. The sauce improves when made ahead and stored refrigerated up to 10 days.
Ingredients
- 2 cups yellow mustard
- ¼ cup whole grain mustard optional
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons garlic granules
- 2 teaspoons onion granules
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Add the ingredients to a medium-size pot and cook over low heat for 15 minutes while occasionally stirring.
- Cool and serve.
Notes
- Make the sauce a day ahead to allow the flavors to meld thoroughly.
- Simmer gently and stir occasionally to avoid bitterness from mustard.
- Fresh minced garlic and onion can substitute granules but should be sautéed first to soften their sharpness.
- For a smoother sauce texture, lightly blend but retain some grain from the mustards if desired.
- Reheat gently over low heat before serving to warm the sauce without boiling.
- Keep refrigerated for up to 10 days; this sauce does not freeze well.
