Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 TBS grated orange peel
  • 2 tsp whole cloves
  • 1 tsp whole allspice
  • ¼ tsp ground coriander
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg plus extra for garnishing if desired
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 64 ounces apple cider
  • 1 ½ cups orange juice

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Combine water, brown sugar, orange peel, and spices in a large sauce pan.
  2. Bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Strain into a larger pot to remove big spice pieces.
  4. Add cider and orange juice.
  5. Heat until warm, then serve. A cinnamon stick can be added to each cup if desired.

Notes

  • Transfer the cider to a crock pot (slow cooker) to keep it warm throughout your evening. Keep the crock pot on low to keep the cider warm without being scaldingly hot.
  • Reheat the apple cider after refrigerating by either warming up on the stove on medium-low, in the oven (in an oven-safe container) until it reaches a warm temperature, or in a crock pot or Instant Pot (on low, let it come to the temperature you want).
  • Once you’re done with the apple cider for the evening, put it in a pitcher in the fridge – ideally one with a lid. You can store it for about a week.
  • Ingredient Notes:
  • Apple cider – make sure it’s apple cider and not apple juice. Apple cider has a much richer flavor and works much better in this recipe.
  • Grated orange peel – freshly grated orange peel (compared to dry orange peel) works much better in this recipe! If you don’t have oranges and have dried orange peel, you can use it in a pinch but the flavor won’t be the same.
  • Allspice & cloves – make sure they’re both full cloves and allspice, not ground. You want the flavor of the spice but you want to be able to strain them out.
