Tequila Sunrise Cocktail
The Tequila Sunrise is a visually striking cocktail made with tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup that settles at the bottom to create a sunrise effect. Lime juice and seltzer water are optional additions that add brightness and lightness. It's served over ice with an orange slice and maraschino cherry garnish.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 ounces of tequila (see note 1)
- 1 ounce lime juice optional (see note 2)
- 4 ounces orange juice (see note 3)
- 1/2 ounce grenadine (see note 4)
- seltzer water optional (see note 5)
- orange and cocktail cherry, for garnish, wheel
Instructions
- Fill a collins glass (or other tall glass) with ice. Add tequila, lime juice (if using), and orange juice. Stir.
- Pour grenadine down a spoon and let it rise from the bottom of the glass. Do not stir. Top with seltzer water (if using) and garnish with the orange slice and maraschino cherry.
Notes
- Use blanco (silver) tequila as it is unaged and suits this cocktail's flavor profile.
- Lime juice is optional but recommended to enhance the citrus complexity.
- Freshly squeezed orange juice improves the flavor over commercial juice.
- Grenadine syrup creates the characteristic visual sunrise effect and adds sweetness.
- Unsweetened soda water or seltzer can be added to lighten the drink without adding extra sweetness.
- Make cocktails individually to maintain the layered sunrise appearance; avoid blending or batch mixing.
