Ingredients

For the Steak:
  • 1 1/2 pound boneless sirloin steak pounded to 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 Cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • vegetable oil for frying
For the Gravy:
  • 1/2 cup butter salted
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Pound out the steaks until they are approximately 1/4” thick and there should be 4 pieces.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper.  Then in a separate shallow bowl whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
  3. Then dip and coat the steaks in the flour mixture.  Then dip the steak in the buttermilk mixture and then back into the flour again and pack the flour onto the steaks so that it’s completely coated.  Place the coated steaks on a plate. Continue this process until all the steaks are coated.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.  Then heat approximately 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the oil is approximately 350 degrees F.
  5. You will have to work in batches for the next step.  Gently place each coated steak into the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until the steak is lightly golden brown.  Drain the steak on a plate lined with a paper towel and then place the chicken fried steak on a sheet pan in the oven while you fry the remaining steaks.
  6. Then it’s time to make the gravy.  Combine the butter and flour in a medium saucepan.
  7. Heat over medium high heat until the butter is melted and the flour is cooked.  Then pour in the milk and whisk it in to make sure there are no lumps.
  8. Allow the gravy to simmer for 3-5 minute until it thickens.
  9. If the gravy is too thick, add more milk and if the gravy is too thin, allow it to continue to simmer until it has thickened.
  10. Then serve the chicken fried steak with the gravy poured top and enjoy!

Notes

  • This chicken fried steak is best served fresh as it’s crispy and delicious but you can store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
