The Best Homemade Pizza Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 T. olive oil
  • ¼ c. onion grated, or yellow onion
  • 2 garlic minced, large cloves
  • 15 oz. tomato sauce Red Gold brand
  • 6 oz. tomato paste Red Gold brand
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 tsp. oregano dried
  • 1 tsp. basil dried
  • ½ tsp. black pepper ground
  • ⅛ tsp. crushed red pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add olive oil. Once olive oil is shimmering, stir in onion and garlic. Saute for 2 minutes, or until softened and fragrant, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add Red Gold tomato sauce and tomato paste, sugar, salt, oregano, basil, black pepper, and crushed red pepper. Stir to combine.
  3. Turn heat up just a bit. Stir occasionally until it is thoroughly warmed, and then reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring every now and then. Remove saucepan from heat.
  4. Use this pizza sauce with my favorite thin crust pizza dough recipe!

Notes

  • Use pizza sauce immediately. Or let cool to room temperature before transferring it to a container with a tight fitting lid, and store in the refrigerator for up to a week. To freeze, let cool to room temperature and then transfer to freezer-safe containers or bags, and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before using.
