Tzatziki Sauce
Tzatziki Sauce is a creamy Greek yogurt-based condiment featuring finely chopped, drained cucumber, lemon juice, garlic, and fresh dill. The cucumbers are salted to remove excess water, then mixed into yogurt for a thick, tangy sauce with a fresh herbaceous flavor and mild garlic pungency. The sauce is chilled for several hours to develop flavor and soften the raw garlic intensity, resulting in a refreshing and versatile sauce suitable for Mediterranean dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 cucumber peeled, seeds removed and cut into large chunks, medium
- 1½ teaspoons kosher salt for draining cucumber
- 1½ cups yogurt plain, Greek
- 1 garlic grated, small clove
- 4½ teaspoons lemon juice
- 1½ teaspoons dill chopped, fresh
Instructions
- Place the cucumber in a colander in the sink and sprinkle with the kosher salt. Let sit and drain for 30 minutes. Dry thoroughly with paper towels, then chop very finely.
- Combine the finely chopped cucumber with the yogurt, garlic, lemon juice and dill. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. The sauce can be kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days.
Notes
- Salt and drain cucumber for at least 30 minutes to prevent watery sauce.
- Dry cucumber thoroughly with paper towels before mixing with yogurt.
- Refrigerate sauce for at least 2 hours before serving to develop flavor.
- Store in airtight container in refrigerator; use within 3 days for best quality.
