Vanilla Orange Custard Freezer French Toast
Touches of orange zest and vanilla give this french toast a hint of a creamsicle flavor! The outside is crispy and the center is like custard. Heaven!
Ingredients
- 1 French bread day old slightly stale bread bread works best, loaf
- 8 egg
- 2 cups half and half
- 1 Tbs vanilla extract pure
- 2 Tbs sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- salt pinch
- orange optional, zest of 1
- 2-4 Tbs butter plus more for serving
Instructions
- Slice french bread into 1 inch thick slices. Set aside.
- Mix eggs, half and half, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, salt and orange zest in a large shallow dish.
- Heat skillet over medium heat and add 2 Tbs butter until melty and foamy but not burnt.
- Take bread and dip in the egg mixture, making sure that both sides of the bread are well coated.
- Shake off any excess fluid and place on hot skillet. Fry up each piece until golden brown, flip and cook up other side until browned.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with butter, fresh berries, and hot syrup.
Notes
- To Freeze:Remove from skillet, place on a cooling rack and cool completely. After french toast has cooled, place on a parchment covered baking sheet and flash freeze by placing in the freezer for 2 hours. Remove from baking sheet and place french toast in a freezer safe ziploc bag. Label bag and place back in the freezer. When ready to eat, reheat in microwave, oven, or toaster.
