Vinegar Based Carolina BBQ Sauce Recipe
This Carolina BBQ sauce highlights apple cider vinegar as the main ingredient, blended with light brown sugar, garlic and onion granules, red pepper flakes, and ketchup. Simmering these ingredients develops a tangy, slightly sweet sauce with a mild heat and rich spice complexity. Its vinegar base pairs well with beef, pork, chicken, and fries.
Ingredients
- 3 cups apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup light brown sugar packed
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons garlic granules
- 2 teaspoons onion granules
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1/3 cup ketchup
Instructions
- Add the vinegar, brown sugar, and salt to a medium-size pot and bring to a boil.
- Add in all the other ingredients and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes.
- Cool and serve.
Notes
- This sauce can be made up to 3 days in advance to deepen flavors.
- Reheat desired amount over low heat until warm before using.
- Store covered in refrigerator for up to 21 days as it does not freeze well.
- Onion and garlic granules can be substituted with powders or lightly caramelized fresh garlic and onions for a different flavor.
- Pairs well with beef, pork, chicken, and french fries.
