Ingredients

  • 2 pita breads
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon za'atar or more to taste (READ NOTES FOR SUBS)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt or more to taste

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 320°F.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil and seasonings. To prepare plain pita chips, just use salt and garlic powder.
  3. Cut each pita bread into triangles. For an 8-inch pita bread, cut into 8 or 10 triangles. For mini pita bread, cut into quarters.
  4. Brush the olive oil mixture on each side of the pita triangles.
  5. Arrange the pita chips in a single layer in your air fryer basket. You may need to do two batches if you have a small air fryer.
  6. For an extra crispy texture, spray them with avocado oil spray.
  7. Air fry at 320°F for 6 - 9 minutes, flipping halfway through. They should be crisp, golden, and firm but not burnt. Every air fryer is different; check at the 6-minute mark and see if you need more time.
  8. Allow them to cool for a few minutes before enjoying! Serve with hummus, tzatziki, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Storing: Store leftover pita chips in an airtight container at room temperature. If they lose their crispiness, you can reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore their texture.
  • Pita Breads: Substitute with naan or any flatbread of your choice.
  • No Olive Oil Option: If you’re avoiding oil, opt for an avocado oil spray. Ensure the chips are coated and seasoned before air frying.
  • Za'atar: You can still create a flavorful substitute using more common spices if you don’t have sesame seeds, sumac, and marjoram. Here’s an alternative blend: 1 tablespoon dried thyme, 1 tablespoon dried oregano, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, and ½ teaspoon kosher salt.
  • Parmesan Herb Pita Chips: Skip the Za’atar and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese and 1 teaspoon of dried Italian herbs on the pita triangles before air frying.
  • Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips: Brush the pita triangles with 2 tablespoons of melted butter and dust with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar.
  • Spicy Paprika Pita Chips: Dust the pita triangles with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika, ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and ½ teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • Everything Bagel Pita Chips: Combine 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds, 1 teaspoon of poppy seeds, 1 teaspoon of dried garlic, 1 teaspoon of dried onion, and a pinch of salt.
  • Chili Lime Pita Chips: Mix 1 teaspoon of chili powder, zest of one lime, and a pinch of cayenne pepper for a zesty flavor.
  • Ranch Seasoned Pita Chips: Create a ranch-flavored blend with 1 teaspoon of dried dill, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, and a pinch of salt.
