Air Fryer Tofu (Perfect every time!)

This Air Fryer Tofu recipe yields crispy, golden tofu cubes with a tender interior by pressing out excess moisture, seasoning with toasted sesame oil and tamari, then coating lightly with arrowroot starch before air frying. The method promotes even cooking and a flavorful, slightly crunchy coating, suitable for adding protein to various dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 ounce) block extra-firm tofu (not silken)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil toasted
  • 2 tablespoons tamari (gluten-free soy sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch (optional; or corn/tapioca starch)

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Cut the block of tofu into roughly 1-inch cubes. Arrange the cubes in a single layer, close together, on a lint-free towel, and then cover the cubes with the other side of the towel. Place a heavy, flat object on top of the towel to help press out the moisture, like a cutting board with books on top, or a heavy cast iron skillet. Let it rest for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, mix together the toasted sesame oil and tamari (you can use soy sauce if you're not gluten-free) in a small bowl. When the tofu is done being pressed, transfer it to a large bowl and toss with the sauce.
  3. Sprinkle the arrowroot starch, if using, over the seasoned tofu and stir until you can't see any more of the white powder. Transfer the tofu to the air fryer basket, arranging the pieces in a single layer without overlapping.
  4. Cook the tofu at 375º for 15 minutes, tossing the tofu every 5 minutes so that it will cook evenly without sticking to the bottom of the air fryer basket. The tofu will be golden and firm to the touch when it's done, but the inside will still be soft and creamy.
  5. Serve warm on its own, or add this tofu to your favorite salads or main entrees for extra plant-based protein. Tofu can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • Press tofu for at least 10 minutes to remove moisture for better crispiness when air frying.
  • For spice, add 1-2 tablespoons sriracha; for sweet-spicy flavor, mix equal parts maple syrup and sriracha.
  • Arrowroot starch is optional but helps form a crispy coating; omit if preferred.
  • Ensure to toss tofu every 5 minutes during air frying to cook evenly and prevent sticking.
