Baked Candied Yams
Baked Candied Yams combine tender orange yams with a sweet, spiced glaze made from brown and white sugars, orange juice, and warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The yams are coated in a buttery sugar mixture and baked until golden and soft, with a thickening sauce that clings to each piece. This recipe offers a balance of sweetness and subtle spice, highlighting the natural sweetness of the yams while providing a rich, glossy finish. It is a comforting side dish suitable for holiday meals or everyday dinners.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds orange yam or other sweet potato, peeled and cut in half or cubed
- 6 tablespoons butter melted
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1/3 cup orange juice
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ginger
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cloves ground
- ¼ salt
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Peel the yams with a peeler. Slice the yams in half the long way. Slice into half in half moon shaped pieces. Add all yams to the baking dish.
- In a medium-sized bowl add the melted butter, brown sugar, white sugar, orange juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Stir until well mixed.
- Pour the butter and sugar mixture over the yams. Gently stir to coat the yams evenly with butter.
- Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the baking dish and baste the yams with the butter sauce with a silicone brush or spoon.
- Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until sweet potatoes are golden and tender when pierced with a fork. Serve and enjoy! The sauce will continue to thicken as the yams begin to cool.
Notes
- Use orange-fleshed yams or sweet potatoes peeled and sliced evenly for consistent cooking.
- For a thinner glaze, increase orange juice to 1/2 cup instead of 1/3 cup.
- Add 3-4 cups of mini marshmallows on top after baking, then bake at 450°F for 2-3 minutes to brown if desired.
- The sauce thickens as the yams cool, enhancing the glazed texture.
