Baked Candied Yams
Description
Baked Candied Yams present a classic way to serve sweet potatoes with a luscious sweet glaze. This recipe uses orange yams peeled and sliced into half-moon shapes, tossed in a melted butter mixture blended with both brown and white sugar, orange juice, vanilla, and a warming mix of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. The yams are baked in a covered dish, basted midway through cooking to ensure even coating and glaze development. The final texture is tender and golden with a slightly thickened buttery sauce that intensifies as the dish cools.
The flavor is sweet yet layered with aromatic spices that complement the yam’s natural earthiness. The orange juice adds light acidity and brightness to balance the sugars. Baking allows the sugars to caramelize slightly, giving the dish an inviting golden hue and depth of flavor. This side dish pairs well with roasted meats or holiday entrees, adding a rich and textured complement to the plate.
The recipe offers flexibility with yam varieties, though orange-fleshed types yield the best results. To achieve a more liquid glaze, increasing the orange juice quantity is suggested. For a different texture and sweetness, marshmallows can be added towards the end of baking and browned lightly under higher heat to create a classic toasted topping.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds orange yam or other sweet potato, peeled and cut in half or cubed
- 6 tablespoons butter melted
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1/3 cup orange juice
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ginger
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cloves ground
- ¼ salt
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Peel the yams with a peeler. Slice the yams in half the long way. Slice into half in half moon shaped pieces. Add all yams to the baking dish.
- In a medium-sized bowl add the melted butter, brown sugar, white sugar, orange juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Stir until well mixed.
- Pour the butter and sugar mixture over the yams. Gently stir to coat the yams evenly with butter.
- Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the baking dish and baste the yams with the butter sauce with a silicone brush or spoon.
- Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until sweet potatoes are golden and tender when pierced with a fork. Serve and enjoy! The sauce will continue to thicken as the yams begin to cool.
Notes
- Use orange-fleshed yams or sweet potatoes peeled and sliced evenly for consistent cooking.
- For a thinner glaze, increase orange juice to 1/2 cup instead of 1/3 cup.
- Add 3-4 cups of mini marshmallows on top after baking, then bake at 450°F for 2-3 minutes to brown if desired.
- The sauce thickens as the yams cool, enhancing the glazed texture.
