Banana Bread With Streusel Topping

The perfect banana bread recipe with a flavorful streusel topping. The nuts and mini chocolate chips take this quick bread to a whole delicious new level.

Ingredients

Streusel Topping
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter cool, but slightly softened
  • 1/4 cup walnuts chopped
Banana Bread
  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour whole wheat flour works well also
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 4 very ripe bananas mashed with large fork
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips plus more to sprinkle on top after baked
  • 1/2 cup walnuts chopped

Instructions

Prepare Loaf Pan

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease or butter and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Set aside.
Streusel Topping
  1. Add flour, brown sugar, andcinnamon to a small mixing bowl and blend. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or fork, until coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped Walnuts. Set aside. 
Banana Bread
  1. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until blended. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating each well.
  3. With a wooden spoon, stir in the mashed bananas, buttermilk and vanilla extract. Stir in prepared flour mixture. Don’t over mix. Stir in chocolate chips and chopped walnuts.
  4. Spoon thick batter into prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the top. Place in oven and bake 60-70 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Remove from oven and sprinkle with additional mini chocolate chips (if desired). Cool 15 minutes in the pan on a wire cooling rack. Remove the bread from pan and cool on the wire rack. Serve warm, or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Pecans can be used instead of walnuts.
  • Use milk, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate.
