Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup light beer such as a pale ale or lager
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 large, yellow onions cut into 1/2-inch rings

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Gradually whisk in the beer until the batter is smooth.
  2. Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot to 375°F. While the oil is heating, separate the onion slices into rings.
  3. Dip the onion rings into the batter, ensuring each ring is well coated, and then carefully place them into the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning once.
  4. Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
