BEST Char Siu Sauce
A flavorful Char Siu Sauce combining hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, Chinese rice wine, and aromatic spices such as Chinese five spice, garlic powder, and ground ginger creates a balanced glaze. It's simmered briefly and cooled for ready use, with optional red food coloring for the traditional look. The sauce is suited for marinating or glazing pork and can be stored refrigerated for at least two weeks.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
- hoisin sauce HIGHLY recommended for best flavor!, homemade
- 1/3 cup soy sauce or tamari
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons Chinese rice wine
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil toasted
- 2 teaspoons Chinese five spice
- Chinese five spice HIGHLY recommended for best flavor!, homemade
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- red food coloring optional for traditional red color, natural, a few drops
Instructions
- Place all of the ingredients in a small saucepan except for the food coloring (if using). Bring it a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it cool completely.Store in the refrigerator where the sauce will keep for at least 2 weeks. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
