Blood Orange Margarita with Smoky Salt
This Blood Orange Margarita with Smoky Salt combines fresh blood orange and lime juices with silver tequila and Grand Marnier, creating a bright, citrus-forward cocktail with a subtle smoky and spicy edge from the seasoned salt rim. The drink’s balance of tartness and spirituous warmth can be adjusted with optional simple syrup for sweetness, served straight or over ice depending on preference.
Ingredients
For The Blood Orange Margarita:
- 3 ounces blood orange juice, fresh
- 1 ounce lime juice fresh
- 2 ounces tequila silver
- 1 ounce Grand Marnier
- simple syrup optional, 1/2 ounce
For The Smoky Salt Rim:
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika Spanish
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1 lime wedge
Instructions
- To make salt rim, mix salt, sugar and paprika together and spread on a small plate. Use a lime wedge to moisten the edge of a glass, then dip edge into salt mixture.
- In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all ingredients for blood orange margarita. Shake until fully mixed, then pour into glass. I prefered to serve mine without ice, but you can serve over ice if you would like,
Notes
- The sweetener is optional; try the cocktail without simple syrup first and adjust to taste.
- Grand Marnier provides a distinctive flavor compared to triple sec or Cointreau commonly used in margaritas.
- Five to six blood oranges are typically needed to yield about half a cup of juice for this recipe.
