Blood Orange Margarita with Smoky Salt
Description
The Blood Orange Margarita with Smoky Salt features freshly squeezed blood orange juice and lime juice blended with silver tequila and Grand Marnier, a cognac-based orange liqueur. This mix creates a vibrant, tangy cocktail with layers of citrus complexity. The smoky salt rim, made by combining kosher salt, smoked paprika, sugar, and lime juice, lends a subtle heat and smoky flavor contrast that complements the tartness of the citrus and the smoothness of the alcohol.
Preparation involves moistening the glass rim with lime and dipping it in the smoky salt blend before shaking the cocktail ingredients with ice and straining into the glass. The cocktail can be enjoyed neat or served over ice based on preference. Simple syrup is optional and added according to individual sweetness preference since the blood orange juice often provides enough natural sugar.
Using Grand Marnier instead of the more common triple sec or Cointreau adds depth and a distinctive aromatic note. Yield and juice extraction depend on the blood oranges used, typically requiring 5 to 6 oranges to obtain enough juice for this recipe.
Ingredients
For The Blood Orange Margarita:
- 3 ounces blood orange juice, fresh
- 1 ounce lime juice fresh
- 2 ounces tequila silver
- 1 ounce Grand Marnier
- simple syrup optional, 1/2 ounce
For The Smoky Salt Rim:
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika Spanish
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1 lime wedge
Instructions
- To make salt rim, mix salt, sugar and paprika together and spread on a small plate. Use a lime wedge to moisten the edge of a glass, then dip edge into salt mixture.
- In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all ingredients for blood orange margarita. Shake until fully mixed, then pour into glass. I prefered to serve mine without ice, but you can serve over ice if you would like,
Notes
- The sweetener is optional; try the cocktail without simple syrup first and adjust to taste.
- Grand Marnier provides a distinctive flavor compared to triple sec or Cointreau commonly used in margaritas.
- Five to six blood oranges are typically needed to yield about half a cup of juice for this recipe.
