Braised Cabbage With Bacon
This dish braises sliced green cabbage with crisp bacon, sautéed garlic, and onions until tender. The slow cooking softens the cabbage and blends its mild flavor with the smoky bacon and aromatic aromatics, creating a savory side with balanced textures from tender cabbage and crispy bacon.
Ingredients
- 1 green cabbage large, cored and sliced into ½-inch thick
- ½ pound Bacon cut into ½- inch thick
- 1 onion thinly sliced, large
- 6 garlic thinly sliced, cloves
- salt
- black pepper
Instructions
- Heat the bacon in a large sauce over medium-high heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fat is rendered and the bacon is crispy, 7 to 8 minutes.
- Add garlic and onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, around 5 to 7 minutes.
- Add cabbage, salt, and pepper and cook until slightly wilted, 5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook covered for about 35 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally until the cabbage is tender. Add a couple of tablespoons of water if it becomes dry.
- Adjust taste and season with salt and pepper if need be.
Notes
- Quarter the cabbage before coring and slicing thinly to get better control while cutting.
- Add a few tablespoons of water if the cabbage looks dry during braising to keep it moist.
