Buñelos Uhang (Chamorro Shrimp Patties)

Buñelos uhang are delicious fried shrimp patties prepared with green beans, corn and peas, that are popular on the island of Guam.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • ⅓ lb fresh green beans , sliced ​​thinly
  • ⅓ lb peas
  • 1 onion , chopped
  • ½ lb yellow corn
  • 2 lb Shrimp , shelled and chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic , chopped
  • 4 cups evaporated milk
  • 6 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large volume of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat to a temperature of 350 F / 170 C.
  2. Meanwhile, in the bowl of a stand mixer, mix all the other ingredients using the flat beater.
  3. Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter in the hot oil and fry on both sides until golden brown.

Notes

  • Use an ice cream scooper to easily make the shrimp patties, which will just be a little more rounded.
