Buttercream Frosting

The best Buttercream Frosting is so easy with simple ingredients. Butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. This frosting is great for topping cookies, layer cakes, cupcakes, and cinnamon rolls.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks, soft but cold)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (you can replace one teaspoon with almond extract if you like)
  • Up to 4 Tablespoons milk or heavy cream

  1. Beat butter for a few minutes with a mixer with the paddle attachment or whisk attachment on high speed.
  2. Add powdered sugar and turn the mixer on low speed until the sugar has been incorporated with the butter.
  3. Increase mixer speed to medium and add vanilla extract, salt, and beat for 3 minutes scraping down the sides as needed with a spatula. If your frosting needs to be thinned out add milk or cream 1 tablespoon at a time. For a more stiff consistency, add more powdered sugar.

Notes

  • If making ahead of time store it in an airtight container for up to 5 days. When ready to use, let frosting sit at room temperature until soft enough to spread. Freeze for up to one month. Let thaw in the fridge for 24 hours before using.
