Cabbage and Sausage Recipe
Cabbage and Sausage is a hearty skillet dish featuring browned smoked sausage pieces cooked with cabbage, bell pepper, onion, shredded carrot, and garlic. The vegetables are softened covered in the pan with added water, then baked briefly in the oven to blend flavors. The recipe balances smoky, savory sausage with tender, slightly caramelized vegetables for a comforting one-pan meal.
Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoon olive oil
- 1 lb smoked sausage sliced, Polska Kielbasa
- 1 cabbage or only 1/2 if it's a large cabbage, head
- 1 bell pepper roughly chopped, red
- 1 onion chopped
- 2 carrot shredded
- 3 garlic minced, cloves
- salt
- black pepper
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- Heat 1 Tbsp of olive oil in a large skillet. Cook sausage for a couple of minutes per side to brown on both sides. Transfer cooked sausage to a plate.
- Add another Tbsp of olive oil in the skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Add the vegetables, and cook covered for about 5 -7 minutes until tender, stirring occasionally.
- Add sausage and 1 cup water to the skillet, stir everything, and place in the preheated oven. Cook covered with a foil for about 25 minutes. Remove foil, and cook for another 5 minutes. Serve warm.
Notes
- Browning the sausage thoroughly develops deeper flavor from the crust; don't rush this step.
- Slice vegetables evenly for consistent tenderness and texture throughout the dish.
- Keep the skillet covered during oven cooking to trap moisture and soften cabbage effectively.
- Using an oven-safe cast iron or Staub skillet improves heat retention and flavor.
- Customize seasoning with smoked paprika, apple cider vinegar, or red pepper flakes to suit your preference.
