CHILE DE ÁRBOL SALSA

Ingredients

  • 8-10 dried chile de árbol peppers (adjust to your spice preference)
  • ½ cup water (or more, for desired consistency)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup white onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon Mexican oregano

  1. Toast the chiles: Heat a dry skillet or comal over medium heat. Toast the dried chiles for about 1-2 minutes per side, just until fragrant and slightly darkened. Be careful not to burn them, as they can become bitter. Remove the stems from the toasted chiles.
  2. Soak the chiles: Place the toasted chiles in a bowl and cover them with the hot water. Let them soak for about 15 minutes, or until softened.
  3. Blend the salsa: Transfer the soaked chiles and soaking liquid to a blender. Add the garlic, onion, apple cider vinegar, salt, and oregano (if using). Blend until smooth.
  4. Adjust consistency: If the salsa is too thick, add more water, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Taste and adjust: Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt or vinegar.
  6. Serve: Serve the salsa immediately or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Chile de Árbol Heat: Chile de árbol peppers are quite spicy. Start with a smaller amount if you're not used to them and add more if you like it hotter.
