Ingredients

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 2¾ cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and just begins to bubble.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Pour the pudding into a large serving bowl or into individual dishes. To prevent a skin from forming on top of the pudding, place plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pudding, leaving no air between.
  6. Refrigerate until chilled and set, about 2 hours. Serve cold.
