Classic Margarita Recipe

A Classic Margarita is a balanced cocktail featuring tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice, served over ice in a glass optionally rimmed with salt. The blend of citrus acidity and sweetness from the orange liqueur highlights the distinct agave flavor of tequila. It’s a refreshing drink that can be shaken or stirred to chill and then garnished with a lime wedge.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce triple sec orange liqueur
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • ice
  • 1 lime for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Margarita salt optional

  1. Salt the glass. If you'd like a salt-rimmed glass, slice a lime into quarters and rub one of the quarters along the rim of a glass. Spread margarita salt onto a small plate and turn the glass upside down into the salt. The salt should stick to the rim.
  2. Mix it together. To make the margarita, add the tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice to a cocktail shaker with ice. Give it a few shakes. Alternatively, you can stir all of the ingredients together in a glass.  
  3. Serve. Add ice to your glass, then pour the margarita into the glass. Garnish with lime wedges. 

Notes

  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice rather than bottled juice to ensure bright, fresh flavor.
  • When serving outdoors or in larger quantities, consider using a sturdy break-resistant pitcher to prepare a batch of margaritas.
