Classic Margarita Recipe

A Classic Margarita is a balanced cocktail featuring tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice, served over ice in a glass optionally rimmed with salt. The blend of citrus acidity and sweetness from the orange liqueur highlights the distinct agave flavor of tequila. It’s a refreshing drink that can be shaken or stirred to chill and then garnished with a lime wedge.

Description

The Classic Margarita Recipe combines tequila with triple sec, an orange-flavored liqueur, and freshly squeezed lime juice. The traditional preparation involves salting the rim of the serving glass by rubbing lime and dipping it into margarita salt. The ingredients are then either shaken with ice in a cocktail shaker or stirred directly in the glass. The final drink is poured over fresh ice and garnished with a lime wedge to enhance the citrus aroma.

The use of fresh lime juice is emphasized for optimal flavor, as bottled juice does not provide the same brightness or acidity. The combination results in a tangy, mildly sweet cocktail with a slight salty note when rimmed. Margarita salt adds a contrasting flavor that complements the drink’s citrusy sharpness.

This margarita suits casual gatherings or quiet evenings, with options to scale up for larger batches. Serving it chilled and freshly prepared preserves the lively character of the citrus and tequila blend, making it an appropriate choice for warm-weather sipping or pairing with Mexican-inspired dishes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce triple sec orange liqueur
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • ice
  • 1 lime for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Margarita salt optional

Instructions

  1. Salt the glass. If you'd like a salt-rimmed glass, slice a lime into quarters and rub one of the quarters along the rim of a glass. Spread margarita salt onto a small plate and turn the glass upside down into the salt. The salt should stick to the rim.
  2. Mix it together. To make the margarita, add the tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice to a cocktail shaker with ice. Give it a few shakes. Alternatively, you can stir all of the ingredients together in a glass.
  3. Serve. Add ice to your glass, then pour the margarita into the glass. Garnish with lime wedges.

Notes

  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice rather than bottled juice to ensure bright, fresh flavor.
  • When serving outdoors or in larger quantities, consider using a sturdy break-resistant pitcher to prepare a batch of margaritas.
