Cool Whip Frosting
Description
The Cool Whip Frosting blends instant vanilla pudding mix, powdered sugar, cold milk, and vanilla extract, whipped together before folding in thawed whipped topping. This process thickens the mixture to a spreadable consistency that retains some lightness and airiness from the whipped topping, resulting in a smooth, creamy frosting.
Its texture is stable enough for decorating but remains softer than traditional buttercream. The vanilla pudding provides a mild vanilla taste balanced with sweetness from the sugar, while the cold ingredients help achieve the ideal frosting thickness.
This frosting is adaptable to various flavors by using different pudding mixes and can be colored easily with gel food coloring. Store it refrigerated in airtight containers for up to three days, or freeze for extended storage without notable texture loss. It works well on a variety of baked goods including cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.
For firmer textures, extra powdered sugar can be added incrementally until desired thickness is reached, accounting for different types of whipped toppings. Allowing the pudding mixture to sit ensures proper thickening before folding in whipped topping.
Ingredients
- 3.4 oz instant vanilla pudding mix
- 8 oz whipped topping thawed, extra creamy
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- ¾ cup milk cold
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract clear
Instructions
- In a medium size mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, cold milk and vanilla extract. Mix for 30-45 seconds.
- Add in instant vanilla pudding and mix for 2 minutes until thickened. Then let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Fold in whipped topping and mix until thoroughly combined.
- Frosting is ready to use!
Notes
- Store the frosting refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
- For longer storage, freeze the frosting in an airtight container for up to 3 months without compromising texture.
- Gel food coloring can be added to change the frosting color as desired without thinning it.
- If a stiffer frosting is preferred, add powdered sugar one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
- Any pudding flavor can be substituted to vary the frosting flavor profile.
- Ensure the Cool Whip is fully thawed before mixing to achieve the best consistency.
- When using regular Cool Whip instead of extra creamy, start by adding 4 tablespoons of powdered sugar and increase if needed for thickness.
