Coquito - Authentic Puerto Rican Egg-Free Eggnog

Coquito is a traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink that blends sweetened condensed milk, cream of coconut, coconut milk, and white rum into a creamy, rich beverage. This egg-free version offers a smooth, thick texture with distinct coconut flavor, gently spiced with vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon. It is chilled before serving, allowing the flavors to meld and the drink to thicken slightly. The natural separation of coconut fat when cold is remedied by shaking or blending before pouring into small glasses for a festive presentation.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup water
  • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 ½ cups rum light, white aka carta blanca, Bacardi brand
  • 15 oz cream of coconut Coco lopez
  • 13.5 oz coconut milk
  • 1 pinch salt pinch
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon for sprinkling

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Place the water, sweetened condensed milk, rum, vanilla in the blender. Add the coconut milk last just up to the 6 cup line.  Hold the lid tightly and gently blend. Chill in the fridge for up to 5 hours before serving. Stir again before serving.
  2. Shake vigorously before serving.
  3. Pour into small 6 oz. glasses and sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Store coquito in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 8 weeks, shaking well before each serving to reincorporate separated coconut fat.
  • The recipe uses canned coconut milk and cream of coconut; these provide a thicker, richer texture than carton coconut milk.
  • Traditional Puerto Rican white rum is recommended, but you can adjust the amount to taste or use almond extract for a non-alcoholic version.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon or other warm spices on top when serving for added aroma and flavor.
  • Sweetness can be adjusted by substituting evaporated milk for condensed milk and adding sweetener like agave if desired.
