Coquito - Authentic Puerto Rican Egg-Free Eggnog
Description
"Coquito - Authentic Puerto Rican Egg-Free Eggnog" combines canned sweetened condensed milk, cream of coconut, coconut milk, and Puerto Rican white rum into a luscious and creamy holiday cocktail without eggs. The recipe starts by blending these ingredients with water, vanilla, and a pinch of salt, then chilling the mixture. This chilling step enriches the texture and lets the flavors meld. On serving, a dusting of cinnamon adds a gentle spiced aroma, complementing the coconut's natural sweetness.
The drink has a thick, creamy consistency imparted mainly by the sweetened condensed milk and the creamy coconut components. The rum used is typically a light rum like Bacardi white, which lends smoothness without overpowering the other flavors. Because the coconut fat solidifies when cold, the drink is shaken well before serving to re-incorporate any separation, ensuring a consistent texture.
Coquito is traditionally served in small glasses as a festive holiday beverage. It can also be adjusted for non-alcoholic options by substituting almond extract and serving with ice. This version keeps well refrigerated for several weeks but requires shaking before each pour to maintain its creamy consistency.
This recipe avoids eggs to extend shelf life and simplify preparation, while still capturing the signature richness and tropical flavors that make coquito a beloved choice during the holidays.
Ingredients
- ½ cup water
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 1 ½ cups rum light, white aka carta blanca, Bacardi brand
- 15 oz cream of coconut Coco lopez
- 13.5 oz coconut milk
- 1 pinch salt pinch
- 1 tsp vanilla
- ¼ tsp cinnamon for sprinkling
Instructions
- Place the water, sweetened condensed milk, rum, vanilla in the blender. Add the coconut milk last just up to the 6 cup line. Hold the lid tightly and gently blend. Chill in the fridge for up to 5 hours before serving. Stir again before serving.
- Shake vigorously before serving.
- Pour into small 6 oz. glasses and sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Enjoy!
Notes
- Store coquito in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 8 weeks, shaking well before each serving to reincorporate separated coconut fat.
- The recipe uses canned coconut milk and cream of coconut; these provide a thicker, richer texture than carton coconut milk.
- Traditional Puerto Rican white rum is recommended, but you can adjust the amount to taste or use almond extract for a non-alcoholic version.
- Sprinkle cinnamon or other warm spices on top when serving for added aroma and flavor.
- Sweetness can be adjusted by substituting evaporated milk for condensed milk and adding sweetener like agave if desired.
