Croque Monsieur
Croque Monsieur sandwiches are made from firm white bread spread with a mayonnaise and Dijon mustard mixture, layered with Swiss cheese and deli ham, then dipped in an egg and milk wash before pan-frying to a golden crust. The exterior yields a crisp, buttery shell, while the melted cheese and ham inside provide a savory, creamy filling, resulting in a rich, comforting snack or light meal.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 8 lices white bread firm
- 4 lices swiss cheese
- 8 lices ham deli
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 3 egg
- ½ cup milk
Instructions
- Mix mayo and mustard in a small bowl. Spread onto 4 bread slices. Add cheese and ham to each bread slice. Place the other slice of bread on top of the ham.
- Meanwhile, whisk eggs and milk in a pie plate until well blended.
- Place butter in a skillet and melt.
- Dip each sandwich in egg mixture (make sure all sides are coated), then place in buttered pan. Fry until golden brown on both sides (a few minutes on each side).
Notes
- Air fryer method: bake sandwiches at 375-400°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway, then broil 1-2 minutes per side.
- Assemble sandwiches in advance and store airtight in fridge until ready to dip and fry.
- Store leftovers refrigerated up to 3 days or freeze 1-2 months; reheat via oven, toaster oven, skillet, or microwave.
- Coat all bread sides with egg mixture but do not soak to avoid sogginess.
- Use firm breads like sourdough, brioche, or thick-cut sandwich bread for best texture.
- Mini versions can be made with baguette slices.
- For Croque Madame, top sandwich with a fried egg with runny yolk.
