Croque Monsieur
Description
The Croque Monsieur starts with mixing mayonnaise and Dijon mustard, which is spread onto slices of firm white bread to add moisture and flavor. Each slice is topped with Swiss cheese and deli ham, then covered with another bread slice to form sandwiches. Separately, a mixture of eggs and milk is whisked until well combined. Butter is melted in a skillet for frying.
Each sandwich is dipped on all sides in the egg wash, ensuring a coating that will form a crisp crust when fried. The sandwiches cook in the butter until golden brown on both sides, developing a crunchy outer layer while the cheese inside softens and melts with the ham. The frying technique produces a richly textured result with a warm, savory interior.
Optional oven or air fryer preparation allows for baking sandwiches before broiling lightly for a similar finish. Sandwiches can be pre-assembled and refrigerated, then dipped and cooked fresh when needed. Leftovers keep well refrigerated or frozen and can be reheated by various methods. Using sturdy bread like sourdough or brioche helps prevent sogginess from the egg wash. Adding a fried egg atop the sandwich transforms it into a Croque Madame variation.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 8 lices white bread firm
- 4 lices swiss cheese
- 8 lices ham deli
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 3 egg
- ½ cup milk
Instructions
- Mix mayo and mustard in a small bowl. Spread onto 4 bread slices. Add cheese and ham to each bread slice. Place the other slice of bread on top of the ham.
- Meanwhile, whisk eggs and milk in a pie plate until well blended.
- Place butter in a skillet and melt.
- Dip each sandwich in egg mixture (make sure all sides are coated), then place in buttered pan. Fry until golden brown on both sides (a few minutes on each side).
Notes
- Air fryer method: bake sandwiches at 375-400°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway, then broil 1-2 minutes per side.
- Assemble sandwiches in advance and store airtight in fridge until ready to dip and fry.
- Store leftovers refrigerated up to 3 days or freeze 1-2 months; reheat via oven, toaster oven, skillet, or microwave.
- Coat all bread sides with egg mixture but do not soak to avoid sogginess.
- Use firm breads like sourdough, brioche, or thick-cut sandwich bread for best texture.
- Mini versions can be made with baguette slices.
- For Croque Madame, top sandwich with a fried egg with runny yolk.
