Czech Apple Compote – Jablečný kompot
Join me in making a Czech apple compote, spiced with cloves and cinnamon. It is quick to make and tastes best when served warm.
Ingredients
- 5 medium apple
- 5 cloves whole spices
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 lices lemon
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Peel 5 medium apples and cut them in half. Remove the cores and slice the apples into roughly equal-sized wedges.
- Place the apple wedges in a pot and cover them with 2 cups water. Add ¼ cup granulated sugar, 5 cloves, ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 2 slices lemon.
- Bring to a boil, then lower the heat. Cover and simmer gently for about 15 minutes, or until the apple slices are soft but not mushy.
- Serve the finished apple compote warm.
Notes
- The basic recipe makes 4 portions.
- The apples do not need to be fully covered with liquid while boiling. It is sufficient if they are about two-thirds submerged. This way, they will stew rather than cook, resulting in a more intense flavor.
- For even more aroma and fragrance, add star anise to the compote.
- I recommend removing the cloves before serving. This spice smells lovely, but it would turn bitter on your tongue if you bite into it.
