Dairy Free Hot Chocolate (Bourbon Hot Chocolate)

A thick, rich, decadent, dairy free hot chocolate with a splash of bourbon to warm you up from the inside! Such a simple recipe made with just 4 ingredients! Dairy free and vegan.

Course: Dessert, Drinks, Cocktails, Others
Cuisine: European, Canadian, gluten-free

Ingredients

  • 4 oz bittersweet chocolate good quality
  • 2 cups almond milk unsweetened
  • 4 fl oz bourbon whiskey
  • 1 tbsp sugar optional
To top
  • 2 marshmallows (Vegan marshmallows to keep it vegan)
  • whipped topping dairy free or vegan

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Add the bittersweet chocolate into a small saucepan with 1/2 cup of almond milk.
  2. Heat over medium heat, while stirring, until the chocolate melts. Keep stirring to prevent the chocolate from burning, until you have a smooth chocolate sauce.
  3. Add the rest of the milk and sugar (if using), and lower the heat to medium low.
  4. Mix with a whisk to combine. Continue to heat the chocolate milk over medium low heat, whisking frequently, until the chocolate milk thickens (about 5 minutes).
  5. Heating this over low heat (without letting it boil) will reduce the milk to a thick, luscious consistency. Whisking frequently is important to prevent a milk skin from forming on top - if a milk skin does form, whisk it back into the milk.
  6. Add the bourbon and stir to mix.
  7. Serve in two small glasses or demitasse cups (it's a rich, robust drink, so a little goes a long way).
  8. Serve with vegan marshmallows or dairy free whipping cream. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Note 1 - Make sure the bittersweet chocolate has no milk in the ingredients.
