Ingredients
- 500 g white bread flour Strong
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dried yeast
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 300 ml warm water
- 200 g mozzarella cheese Grated
- 100 g cheddar cheese Grated
- 200 g tomato sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp red chilli flakes Optional
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil For greasing
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the flour mixture. Stir well until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until it's smooth and elastic. Form it into a ball.
- Grease another bowl with vegetable oil and place the dough in it. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it proof for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F) and grease a rectangular baking dish (around 9x13 inches) with vegetable oil.
- Gently stretch and press the dough into the greased baking dish, making sure it covers the bottom evenly. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Sprinkle the grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese evenly over the sauce. Then, sprinkle the dried oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes (if using) over the cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and slightly caramelized.
- Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing it into squares. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Detroit-style pizza!
Notes
- Detroit-style pizza is known for its square shape and crispy edges, so make sure to press the dough all the way to the edges of the pan.
- Feel free to customise your toppings with your favourite ingredients like pepperoni, mushrooms, or bell peppers.
- This pizza pairs wonderfully with a side of garlic butter dipping sauce or a fresh salad.
