"Dorito" Popcorn - dairy free, gluten free, vegan

"Dorito" Popcorn is seasoned popcorn coated with a blend of spices including nutritional yeast, garlic and onion powders, cumin, paprika, chili powder, cayenne, and salt, mimicking the flavor profile of Doritos. Popped in coconut oil to help the seasoning adhere, this snack is dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

Description

This popcorn recipe begins by popping kernels using coconut oil, which adds a subtle richness and helps the seasoning stick. The seasoning blend is made by combining nutritional yeast – notable for its nutty, cheesy flavor without dairy – with garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, chili powder, optional cayenne pepper for heat, and salt. The spices are finely ground together for even coating. Once the popcorn is popped, the seasoning is sprinkled over and the popcorn is tossed to distribute the flavors. The result is a savory, mildly spicy snack with a cheesy umami edge from the nutritional yeast, offering a plant-based alternative to traditional cheese-flavored chips.

This snack is suitable for those avoiding dairy and gluten, while delivering a familiar chip-like taste. Using coconut oil for popping enhances the oiliness needed for seasoning to adhere and adds a subtle flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels organic preferred, unpopped
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons coconut oil (for popping)
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder if you would like to make your own garlic granules, see Easy Homemade Granulated Garlic, or granules
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder or granules
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (if you would prefer homemade chili powder, see The "Best" Basic Chili Powder)
  • 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons salt (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare popcorn using oil with your preferred method. This Healthy Stovetop Popcorn post has more information about popping and about my favorite stovetop popcorn popper. Air popped popcorn won't work without additional oil since the seasoning needs moisture from the oil to adhere to the popcorn.
  2. Combine all spices, and salt in a small bowl.
  3. Blend seasonings in a spice or coffee grinder, or blend in blender to make a fine powder.
  4. Sprinkle seasoning over popcorn and toss to coat.

Notes

  • Nutritional yeast is a dairy-free ingredient that adds a nutty, cheesy flavor and is commonly used by vegans to replicate cheese taste.
  • For best seasoning adherence, use popcorn popped in coconut oil rather than air-popped popcorn without oil.
  • The spice blend can be ground finer using a spice grinder or blender to ensure even coating on popcorn.
