Ingredients

  • 5 baking apples like Honeycrisp
  • 2/3 cup cool water
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup Chopped Pecans
  • 2 tablespoons real maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 5 tablespoons salted butter melted

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Add the filling ingredients to a medium bowl.
  3. Stir together.
  4. Chill until ready to use.
  5. Slice the apples in half.
  6. Scoop out the core.
  7. Place the apple halves in a 9x13-inch dish.
  8. Fill the center of the apples with the filling.
  9. In a separate small dish, stir together the cornstarch and cool water.
  10. Pour the cornstarch mixture around the apples into the bottom of the pan.
  11. Cover the pan tightly with foil.
  12. Bake for 20 minutes.
  13. Uncover and continue baking for about 20 additional minutes. I like to baste the apples with the sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  14. Let the apples sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Apples: I like to use baking apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith.
  • Water: I use cool (about 65F) tap water.
  • Pecans: Feel free to use another type of chopped nut like walnuts. For a nut-free filling, use old-fashioned oats.
  • Maple syrup: Honey will also work.
  • Brown sugar: Light or dark brown sugar will work.
  • Butter: If using unsalted butter, add a pinch or two of salt.
