Easy Baked Beans

An easy baked beans recipe made with maple syrup and no bacon. They're the BEST baked beans from scratch. Healthy and ready in 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans great northern beans (15-ounce cans)
  • ¼ cup, plus 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce recommended: Homemade Barbecue Sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce  (omit, adding extra salt to taste, to make vegetarian)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion finely diced

Instructions

  1. Rinse and drain beans. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, ketchup, maple syrup, tomato paste, Worcestershire, paprika, mustard, cumin, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium-high. Once the oil is hot, add the onion and sauté until fragrant and soft, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the barbecue sauce mixture and bring to a boil. Add the drained beans.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve warm.

Notes

  • TO STORE: Place baked beans in an airtight storage container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • TO REHEAT: Gently rewarm beans in a Dutch oven on the stove over medium-low heat until hot. You can also reheat this dish in the microwave.
  • TO FREEZE: Store leftovers in an airtight, freezer-safe storage container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
