Easy Homemade Applesauce
This easy homemade applesauce blends peeled, chopped Honeycrisp apples cooked with water, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and brown sugar into a smooth, creamy sauce. The natural sweetness and warming spices provide a balanced flavor. It can be enjoyed warm or chilled, making it a comforting snack or versatile side.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 lbs honeycrisp apples
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar up to 1 1/2 tablespoons
Instructions
- Peel and Core Apples: Peel and core the apples and chop them into 1-inch pieces.
- Cook Apples: Add chopped apples, water, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg to a pot and heat on high. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat slightly to a strong simmer. Let simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the apples are fork tender. Taste apples for sweetness. Add more sugar if desired (see recipe notes).
- Blend: Add it all to a Vitamix or other blender and blend until creamy or desired consistency.
- Enjoy hot or let cool and store in the fridge.
Notes
- Refrigerate applesauce for up to one week; freeze for up to six months in freezer-safe containers.
- Safe water bath canning methods can be used to preserve the applesauce for longer storage.
- Honeycrisp apples provide sweetness, but sweeter or tarter apple varieties can be used, adjusting sugar accordingly.
- Cinnamon amount is adjustable to taste; ginger is optional but adds a subtle spicy note.
- Sweeten to preference from 2 teaspoons to 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar per batch.
- Blend to desired texture: creamy with a blender or chunky by mashing by hand.
