Easy Homemade Applesauce
Description
Easy Homemade Applesauce uses Honeycrisp apples peeled and cubed, simmered with water, lemon juice, and spices including cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Brown sugar is added to fine-tune sweetness. After cooking until tender, the mixture is blended until smooth or to desired consistency, with options to leave it chunky or fully pureed.
The simmering softens apples and melds the spices, creating a fragrant, mildly spiced sauce that highlights the apple’s natural flavor enhanced by warm seasonal spices. The lemon juice maintains brightness and prevents browning, while brown sugar adjusts the sweetness.
This applesauce works well served warm or cool, suitable as a snack, side dish, or dessert accompaniment. It keeps refrigerated up to a week, or can be frozen for longer storage. Variations in apple type affect tartness, and sweetness can be adjusted to taste. The sauce can be canned safely using water bath methods for longer shelf life.
The texture is customizable—from chunky to creamy—based on blending time or mashing preference. This flexibility allows the recipe to fit personal taste and texture preferences easily.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 lbs honeycrisp apples
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar up to 1 1/2 tablespoons
Instructions
- Peel and Core Apples: Peel and core the apples and chop them into 1-inch pieces.
- Cook Apples: Add chopped apples, water, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg to a pot and heat on high. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat slightly to a strong simmer. Let simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the apples are fork tender. Taste apples for sweetness. Add more sugar if desired (see recipe notes).
- Blend: Add it all to a Vitamix or other blender and blend until creamy or desired consistency.
- Enjoy hot or let cool and store in the fridge.
Notes
- Refrigerate applesauce for up to one week; freeze for up to six months in freezer-safe containers.
- Safe water bath canning methods can be used to preserve the applesauce for longer storage.
- Honeycrisp apples provide sweetness, but sweeter or tarter apple varieties can be used, adjusting sugar accordingly.
- Cinnamon amount is adjustable to taste; ginger is optional but adds a subtle spicy note.
- Sweeten to preference from 2 teaspoons to 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar per batch.
- Blend to desired texture: creamy with a blender or chunky by mashing by hand.
