Easy Homemade Hummus Recipe
This easy homemade hummus combines cooked chickpeas with tahini, lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and cumin to create a creamy, smooth dip. Adding water or chickpea cooking liquid helps achieve the desired texture, making it perfect for dipping fresh vegetables or chips. The blend of lemon zest and juice adds brightness while cumin and garlic provide warmth and depth. It’s a practical recipe to prepare ahead and keep for quick snacks or appetizers.
Ingredients
- 3 cups chickpea cooked from dried beans
- 1 tsp. lemon zest
- ⅓ cup lemon juice 1 large lemon
- ⅓ cup tahini
- 2 garlic finely minced, cloves
- ⅓ cup olive oil extra virgin, good quality
- 1 tsp. salt to taste
- ¾ tsp. cumin
- ½ tsp. red pepper flakes optional
- 2-4 Tbsp. water or reserved chickpea liquid
Instructions
- Add all hummus ingredients, except for water, into the bowl of a large food processor or high-speed blender.
- Process for 1-2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl every 15-20 seconds.
- Add water or reserved chickpea liquid in 1 tablespoon increments and puree until your desired consistency is reached. Adjust to taste.
- Serve homemade hummus with carrots, celery, cucumber, bell peppers, chips, or crackers. Enjoy!
Notes
- Cook chickpeas up to 2-3 days ahead for convenience.
- Store finished hummus airtight in the refrigerator for 3-5 days after cooking chickpeas.
- Freeze leftovers in airtight containers for 3-4 months; thaw in the refrigerator and blend again to restore creaminess.
- Adjust water or reserved chickpea liquid gradually to reach the preferred hummus consistency.
