Easy Plum Compote
This Easy Plum Compote simmers plums with sugar, lemon juice, and optional cinnamon to create a thickened fruit topping. The plums are quartered with skins on, providing a balance of sweet and slightly tart flavors as the fruit softens but retains some shape. The result is a versatile compote that can be served warm or chilled with desserts or breakfast dishes.
Ingredients
- 7 plum
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoons lemon juice or orange juice
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 cinnamon stick optional
Instructions
- Wash and halve the plums. Remove and discard the stones, leave the skin on them and cut into quarters.
- Add the sugar, water, lemon juice and cinnamon stick to a pot. Heat for a few minutes until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the plums and bring to the boil.
- Reduce the heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-10 minutes or until the fruit begins to break down. The syrup will thicken slightly as it cools.
- Enjoy warm or allow to cool and store in a jar in the fridge for up to 10 days.
Notes
- Store compote in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 10 days for freshness.
- Freeze cooled compote in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to two months.
- Use compote as a topping for pancakes, waffles, ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal, or as a spread on cakes.
- Keeping the plum skins adds color, texture, and flavor while saving prep time.
- Optional flavor additions include cinnamon stick, star anise, or substituting orange juice for lemon juice.
