Easy Plum Compote

This Easy Plum Compote simmers plums with sugar, lemon juice, and optional cinnamon to create a thickened fruit topping. The plums are quartered with skins on, providing a balance of sweet and slightly tart flavors as the fruit softens but retains some shape. The result is a versatile compote that can be served warm or chilled with desserts or breakfast dishes.

Description

The preparation involves washing and halving plums to remove stones while leaving the skins intact, preserving color, taste, and dietary fiber. Sugar, water, lemon juice, and an optional cinnamon stick form a syrup base, warmed to dissolve the sugar before adding the plums. The mixture is brought to a boil then simmered for 7 to 10 minutes until the fruit begins to break down and the liquid thickens slightly upon cooling.

The compote’s texture maintains some firmness in the plum quarters, offering a balance between softness and structure. The optional cinnamon adds warm spice notes, enhancing the fruit’s natural flavor. It can be served warm, or cooled and stored in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. Freezing is also possible for longer storage.

Serving suggestions include topping pancakes, waffles, ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal, or as a cake spread, highlighting the compote’s versatility. Flavor variations can be achieved by substituting orange juice for lemon or adding additional spices like star anise. The compote requires no peeling, simplifying preparation while maximizing flavor depth.
