Fajita Seasoning Mix
This recipe is a homemade fajita seasoning blend combining chili powder, cumin, paprika, sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. It creates a balanced, flavorful spice mix to season meats like chicken, beef, or shrimp for fajitas. The well-rounded seasoning imparts a smoky, slightly spicy, and savory profile when used in cooking.
Ingredients
- 4 teaspoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons cumin ground
- 2 teaspoons paprika (see note 1)
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (see note 2)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- cayenne pepper to taste (see note 3)
- salt to taste
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine chili powder, cumin, paprika, sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper to taste (I like 1/2 teaspoon), and salt to taste (I like 1 teaspoon). Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- Use either sweet or smoked paprika depending on desired smoky flavor depth.
- Sugar is optional; omitting will reduce sweetness in the blend.
- Adjust cayenne pepper amount to control the heat level or omit entirely for no spice.
- Store the seasoning in a sealed container in the pantry for up to six months to maintain freshness.
- Marinate meats with the blend combined with lime juice and cilantro for at least 30 minutes to develop flavor.
