Ingredients
Dough
- 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/3 cups warm water approximately 105°F/40°C
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
For the Filling
- 2 cups shredded cooked chicken
- 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon
- 6 ounces cream cheese softened
- 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 1/3 cups warm water, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour. Knead on low speed until a soft dough ball forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. If the dough is sticky, gradually add up to 1/2 cup additional flour.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly greased large bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Meanwhile, prepare the filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups shredded cooked chicken, 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon, 6 ounces cream cheese, 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. Stir until well combined.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the risen dough into 2 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a rectangle, approximately 12 x 8 inches.
- Spoon half of the filling down the center third of one dough rectangle, leaving a 2-inch border on all sides. Using a knife or bench scraper, make 2-inch slits along both sides of the dough, cutting toward the center. Fold strips over the filling, alternating sides, to form a braid. Pinch ends to seal. Repeat with the second piece of dough and remaining filling.
- In a small bowl, beat 1 large egg. Brush the tops of both braids with the beaten egg.
- Transfer the braids to the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm.
