French Onion Dip

A creamy homemade dip with sweet caramelized onions served with your favorite dippers!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups sweet onion chopped
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ⅔ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. In a 6-inch skillet, combine the onion and butter. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the onion is golden brown. This should take about 20 to 30 minutes. Cool completely.
  2. While the onion is cooking, in a medium bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.
  3. Stir in the cooled onion. Taste and season with salt and black pepper.
  4. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • Onions for French Onion Dip - Much like French onion soup, I like to use a sweet onion such as Walla walla or Vidalia onions. However, this recipe will work with almost any variety of onions. 
  • Cream Cheese Variation - If you'd like a thicker creamy texture, soften 4 oz of cream cheese and beat with a hand mixer until fluffy. Reduce the sour cream by 1/4 cup and proceed with the recipe as written.
  • Fresh herbs can be added. Parsley, fresh chives, and thyme are great options. Sprinkle in a little bit onion powder for more onion flavor if you'd like!
  • French Onion Dip can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. Stir before serving.
