Fried Green Tomatoes
Fried Green Tomatoes are crisp slices of unripe tomatoes coated in a flour, cornmeal, and breadcrumb mixture seasoned with salt and pepper, then fried in canola oil until golden brown. This method creates a crunchy exterior contrasting with the tender, slightly tart tomato inside, offering a classic Southern appetizer or side.
Ingredients
- 2 large tomato green
- 2 egg
- 1/2 cup milk whole
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs plain
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper coarse ground
- canola oil for frying
Instructions
- Cut out the core of the tomato.
- Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 inch slices.
- Make a dredging station, in one bowl eggs and milk are whisked together, in a second bowl the flour and in the third bowl the cornmeal, breadcrumbs, salt and pepper mixed together.
- Dip the tomato slices in the flour, then the milk/egg bowl then the breadcrumbs bowl.
- Place onto a cookie sheet while you coat the remaining slices.
- To a deep skillet add the canola oil, 1 inch deep on medium high heat.
- Using a spatula slide the tomato slices into the hot oil and cook for 3-4 minutes or until browned on each side.
- Remove the cooked tomato slices to a cooling rack.
