Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ½ butter grated
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and set it aside.
  2. Add flour, salt, brown sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon to a large bowl.
  3. Whisk until the ingredients are well mixed.
  4. Add the grated butter to the flour mixture.
  5. Mix until flour compacts easily.
  6. Add the eggs, milk, and maple syrup to a separate mixing bowl.
  7. Whisk them up.
  8. Make a small well in the flour mixture, then add the egg mixture.
  9. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until well incorporated.
  10. Take the dough out of the bowl and lay it flat on a floured surface
  11. Roll the dough out until it becomes about ¼ inch thick.
  12. Cut out small circles in the dough using a 2-inch circle cutter.
  13. Place dough on the prepared baking sheet.
  14. Using your finger, poke 3 holes in the dough to form the eyes and mouth of the ghost.
  15. Brush the ghost scones with maple syrup.
  16. Bake them in the oven for about 10-15 minutes.
  17. Once they’ve completely cooled, sprinkle powdered sugar on top until well-covered. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Solve Stickiness: If your dough is too sticky or moist, add extra flour to prevent it from sticking to your hands.
  • Stretch Them Out: Be sure to poke big holes and stretch the dough before baking them, or you’ll risk the holes closing up. If they do close up, use a straw to make holes again so long as the dough is warm.
  • Don’t Crowd Them: To ensure even baking, line the scones on the baking sheet without overcrowding them.
  • Avoid Overbaking: Always check for doneness to avoid overbaking the scones. They’re done once the dough has turned golden brown on the edges and is slightly firm to the touch.
  • Use Cold Ingredients: To help give your Halloween scones a flaky texture, chill your ingredients, particularly the milk and butter, before using them.
