Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and set it aside.
- Add flour, salt, brown sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon to a large bowl.
- Whisk until the ingredients are well mixed.
- Add the grated butter to the flour mixture.
- Mix until flour compacts easily.
- Add the eggs, milk, and maple syrup to a separate mixing bowl.
- Whisk them up.
- Make a small well in the flour mixture, then add the egg mixture.
- Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until well incorporated.
- Take the dough out of the bowl and lay it flat on a floured surface
- Roll the dough out until it becomes about ¼ inch thick.
- Cut out small circles in the dough using a 2-inch circle cutter.
- Place dough on the prepared baking sheet.
- Using your finger, poke 3 holes in the dough to form the eyes and mouth of the ghost.
- Brush the ghost scones with maple syrup.
- Bake them in the oven for about 10-15 minutes.
- Once they’ve completely cooled, sprinkle powdered sugar on top until well-covered. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Solve Stickiness: If your dough is too sticky or moist, add extra flour to prevent it from sticking to your hands.
- Stretch Them Out: Be sure to poke big holes and stretch the dough before baking them, or you’ll risk the holes closing up. If they do close up, use a straw to make holes again so long as the dough is warm.
- Don’t Crowd Them: To ensure even baking, line the scones on the baking sheet without overcrowding them.
- Avoid Overbaking: Always check for doneness to avoid overbaking the scones. They’re done once the dough has turned golden brown on the edges and is slightly firm to the touch.
- Use Cold Ingredients: To help give your Halloween scones a flaky texture, chill your ingredients, particularly the milk and butter, before using them.
