Greek Beef Meatballs
These Greek Beef Meatballs combine lean ground beef with minced garlic, finely ground oats, herbs like oregano and dill, and grated vegetables for moisture and flavor. Baked until browned and cooked through, they yield meatballs with a tender interior and herbaceous notes. They can be served with tzatziki sauce and fresh vegetables for a gyro-style meal or on their own for a convenient protein option.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef 93 percent lean
- 3 teaspoons garlic minced
- 4 tablespoons old fashioned oats see note 1, finely ground
- 2 tablespoons oregano fresh, finely chopped
- 3 tablespoons baby dill fresh, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper or to taste
- ½ red onion grated, medium
- ¼ cup zucchini finely grated
- 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
- tzatziki sauce optional, for serving
- cucumber optional, chopped, for serving
- tomato optional, chopped, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Drizzle a large oven-safe skillet or baking dish with olive oil.
- In a large bowl combine all ingredients (except for olive oil, tzatziki sauce, cucumbers and tomatoes) and mix well. Shape into 1 1/2 inch balls and place in prepared skillet or baking dish.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until browned and cooked through the center. Serve meatballs gyro-style wrapped in a pita with tomatoes, lettuce, and tzatziki sauce, or serve meatballs alone for a grab-n-go meal.
Notes
- Grind oats finely in a blender or food processor before adding to the meat mixture to help bind the meatballs well.
- These meatballs can be served wrapped in pita with traditional gyro toppings or enjoyed on their own.
